About this toy

A simpler take on our peg board set: one large foam peg board, chunky stackable pegs and coloured laces. Younger children push pegs into the board and match colours; as their grip gets steadier they stack pegs into towers, build patterns, and thread pegs onto the laces. It’s hands-on, screen-free play that builds the grip and coordination they’ll later use for buttons, scissors and pencils.

What’s in the box

  • A soft foam peg board
  • Stackable plastic pegs in a mix of shapes and colours
  • Laces for threading
  • A clear zip-up bag to keep every piece together

46 pieces in total.

Good to know

Designed for ages 3+. Contains small parts, so not suitable for children under 3. CE and UKCA marked.

What does the research say?

Building with pegs uses spatial thinking: working out what goes where, and what sits on top of what. In a study of 3-year-olds, children who were better at copying simple block models also did better at early maths, even after accounting for other thinking skills (Verdine et al., 2014).

Pushing pegs in and threading laces also work the pincer grip children use to hold a pencil, one of the early learning goals children in England work towards by the end of Reception. Fine motor skills at the start of school have been linked to reading and maths years later (Grissmer et al., 2010).

46-piece or 73-piece?

73-piece foam set: soft foam boards, easy-grip pegs, shape beads and laces. More pieces for building up and out, with shapes and sizes to compare.

46-piece peg board: one foam peg board with stackable pegs and laces. A smaller set for pushing, stacking and threading.

Both pack away in a clear zip-up bag and are made for ages 3+. See the 73-piece foam set

What age is it for?

Made for ages 3+. Younger children start by pushing pegs in and stacking them. Lacing and copying colour patterns come as their hands get steadier.
